“You read so many books, it’s like you’re a bear, devouring them. You’re a book bear!” And my nickname was born. It’s often my username, and eventually worked its way into my blog, thanks to my husband. Not many know the story behind my blog, so I wanted to put a post out there to enlighten!
How it all started…
I started The Mama Book Bear when I realized just how frustrated I was with navigating the treacherous waters of new motherhood. I thought there had to be someone out there just as frustrated as I was! Why couldn’t I keep the house clean? Why couldn’t I read as many books as I used to? How come there was never enough time in the day to do everything? If I could just have a couple more hours in the day, I could do everything, be everything!
But that wasn’t going to happen. I knew if I felt this way, there had to be someone else who felt the same. Other moms out there needed to get back into their favorite hobbies, especially reading. I needed to review and recommend all the good books I know. And even review the bad ones to make sure others don’t get stuck and disappointed with them.
Why I’m interested in reviewing books for busy moms…
I want to put my reviews of my favorite books out there for moms because I’ve seen what a good book can do. We stay up late thinking, just one more page, just one more chapter. We feel good saying, “I finished a great book yesterday, here, have my copy!” We’re hungry for more when we’re finished reading.
But I’ve also seen what a terrible book can do. We drag our feet looking at the books piling up on the nightstand or the desk. We feel frustrated because we don’t read, it just doesn’t sound fun anymore. So we turn to less fulfilling pastimes, like scrolling mindlessly through social media and watching meaningless TV shows. I’ve always loved reading, and I want to make sure other moms who also love reading, keep that passion alive through the chaos of raising kids.
What the blog name means to me…
The name of the blog itself actually does come from my husband’s nickname for me: Book Bear. I also have to give him credit for the name of the blog. As I struggled to come up with a name for the blog for days, I finally asked him what he thought. He immediately said, “How about The Mama Book Bear?” And that was it! I knew I had found the name. It’s also especially important to me because when my husband and I announced on social media we were pregnant, we bought a shirt that said “Mama Bear,” and a onesie that said “Baby Bear.” We took a picture of the two pieces of clothing together and posted the picture as our announcement.
At first, it might seem like a silly name, but there is a story behind it, and I hope it helps make sense of why it sounds a little strange. I hope you enjoy all the fun book reviews, both currently on the site and in the future. I believe there are more than enough books to read and enjoy for moms to get back into the habit of reading! And I hope you’re able to find your next favorite book right here.
